Is it ok to reinstall a garbage disposal that has been sitting unused for a year?

I have a garbage disposal that has been sitting in my garage unused for a year. It was removed during a kitchen remodel and the contractor insisted upon installing a new one. The reason stated was the original was sitting usused for a month or so and the contractor's plumber indicated that he had seen lots of garbage disposals fail in those situations.

Ironically, the new disposal he installed has started leaking, with both the washer and the putty around the strainer pretty degraded. I don't know if that's why it case loose, or because of the vibration from operation.

Anyway, I need to reinstall the disposal and I am wondering if it is better to install my original one. It is a higher end model with several years of warranty left over. However, it has been sitting dry in my garage for more than a year.

Is there a high chance of failure if I reinstall that disposal? Is there anything I can do to prevent that or to reduce the risk?

Thanks,

Deepak
